Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air Passenger Traffic Results

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air Passenger Traffic Results

Aegean Airlines and subsidiary Olympic Air have released their financial results for January 2014, together recording a 12% increase in passenger traffic for the month.

In January alone, the two airlines carried a total of 522,000 passengers, 57,000 more than the same month of the previous year.

Olympic Air was acquired by Aegean in October 2013, following the approval granted by the European Commission.

The merged airlines achieved increased levels of activity of 9% from the Athens base, carrying 178,000 passengers, while a significant growth in passenger numbers on international flights carrying 50,000 passengers from Thessaloniki has been noted, despite the seasonality of the base.

For the first time in over four years, both Aegean and Olympic Air’s cumulative domestic traffic has increased.

Passenger travel increased by 18% from the Athens base, carrying a total of 271,000 passengers.

The increase of Aegean and Olympic’s international flights from Athens is a result of the actions taken by the company in 2013 to expand its network with new routes, further developing its activity from the airports of Geneva, Kiev, Warsaw and Prague.

Mr. Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air stated:

"The merging of the airlines, as well as the new lower pricing policy we introduced in November 2013 have both had an immediate and significant effect in boosting traffic.

“Though efforts to support Athens by launching new international destinations from our flight carriers during the winter months have been costly, we believe that the growth it promotes truly contributes to the recovery of the city.

“It is essential for the country and the economy to improve our tourism seasonality and therefore, collective actions are required for the achievement of this cause."
