Cyprus Seeds Welcomes A New Donor, Mohari Hospitality

Cyprus Seeds Welcomes A New Donor, Mohari Hospitality

Mohariy Hospitality (Mohari) has recently become one of the new donors of the not-for-profit organization Cyprus Seeds. Cyprus Seeds will utilize the donation of €100.000 to support the academic teams joining the 3rd funding cycle.

Founded in 2017 by the entrepreneurial investor, Mark Scheinberg, Mohari Hospitality is a global investment company that focuses on the luxury hospitality sector. Mohari is committed to identifying and contributing to philanthropic projects in each area where it does business and is actively supporting projects in Cyprus, Canada, Costa Rica, and Spain, focusing on developing local communities, preserving cultural heritage, and protecting the environment.

On the 13th of September, the Head of Philanthropy at Mohari, Alexandra Weldon, visited the Research Centre for Sustainable Energy (FOSS) of the University of Cyprus and the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC) of The Cyprus Institute. The purpose of her visit was to meet with selected academic teams supported by the Cyprus Seeds, learn more about their breakthrough innovations, and gain insights about the Cyprus Seeds' contribution to supporting researchers in commercializing their research.

Specifically, she had long discussions with SOLEX and ARTES teams about their progress and the next steps to commercialize their research. She emphasized the social impact of both teams on their direct users and the community. Weldon said, "Our philanthropic mission is to empower local communities to thrive, and with a growing presence in Cyprus, we felt it was important to find local causes to support. We are proud to partner with Cyprus Seeds, an organization that does valuable work to enhance the commercial skills and prospects of the brightest young minds in Cyprus. We look forward to seeing the progress that academic teams will make with this funding and the opportunity for our team members to mentor them along the way.”

Cyprus Seeds is a non-profit organization with the mission to support the commercialization of innovative academic research in Cyprus. To achieve its objectives, Cyprus Seeds offers an annual 12M program to a small number of scientific teams whose projects give breakthrough solutions to world problems in any area, including health, environment, and art. In addition to grants, it offers mentoring, business skills training, and networking with investors. Cyprus Seeds is funded through donations from the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Foundations (The Hellenic Initiative, The A.G. Leventis Foundation, Mohari Hospitality – Philanthropy Foundation), corporations (Eurobank Cyprus, EY Cyprus), and individuals in Cyprus and abroad.

Among the outstanding achievements of Cyprus Seeds are the conclusion of two option-to-be licensing agreements, the creation of one start-up company, and the spinning out of one research project from the University of Cyprus. By the end of September, Cyprus Seeds will announce its 3rd funding call to support more academic teams from the Cypriot public and private academic institutions to bring their innovative research ideas from the lab to the market.
