René Troccaz: Developments in Cyprus’ EEZ Concern the Whole of the EU

Developments in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is an issue that concerns the whole of the EU, French Ambassador to Cyprus René Troccaz has said.

During his speech at an event that took place at the University of Cyprus, the Ambassador said that France stands in solidarity with Cyprus and has proven so. He added that last January, experts of the French navy were in Cyprus, in the framework of upgrading the naval base in Mari as well as other military facilities, on the basis of a proposal made by President Anastasiades during his visit to Paris last November.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, Troccaz’s remarks were made during a speech given by Greek Parliamentarian George Koumoutsakos, in the presence of Cyprus FM Ioannis Kasoulides. The French Ambassador said that France is not responsible for the security of the whole world, but wants to play its part as Cyprus’ ally. He said that we are in the middle of a crisis, adding that in order to be able to comprehend the contribution of France, we need to examine its relationship with Cyprus in the long run. He also referred to France’s stance as well as to the stance of other countries in the United Nations the past 43 years.

Troccaz pointed out the France, with the exception of Greece, is one of the few western countries that has equipped Cyprus’ National Guard for 43 years. He said that this is a tangible contribution, not just in theory and it is something that is directly related to the security of the Republic of Cyprus.

In his speech the Ambassador then referred to the visit of President Anastasiades to Paris last November, saying that there was a proposal on behalf of the Cyprus President for France to assist in the upgrade of the naval base in Mari.

Saipem 12000, conducting drilling operations on behalf of Eni in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, had to halt its transfer journey to a new location on Friday 9 February when it was stopped by Turkish military ships with a notice not to continue because there would be military activities in the destination area. Saipem 12000 has planned drilling operations on behalf of ENI in block 3 of the Republic of Cyprus’ EEZ.
