President Anastasiades To Inform European Council On Turkey's Actions, Measures Against Rising Energy Prices, Migration

President Anastasiades To Inform European Council On Turkey's Actions, Measures Against Rising Energy Prices, Migration

President Anastasiades will brief his counterparts in the European Council on Turkish actions in Varosha and the Cypriot EEZ, on measures taken in Cyprus to counter rising energy prices, as well as on the migratory pressures experienced by Cyprus due to arrivals through Turkey and the occupied areas, according to a statement by government spokesperson Marios Pelekanos ahead of the Council, which takes place on Thursday and Friday.

The government spokesperson further said that President Anastasiades is expected to brief his counterparts on developments regarding the fenced-off area of Varosha, the harassment of a research vessel in the Cypriot EEZ by a Turkish vessel, the Turkish Cypriot leadership’s decision to grand land to the occupying forces, and a more general update on developments on the Cyprus problem.

Pelekanos said that the agenda of the European Council includes several important issues such as the “increase in energy prices and the effort to support citizens and businesses, the external aspects of migration, including the instrumentalisation of migrants by third countries, the current situation regarding the pandemic, the digital transition, trade and issues of external policy”.

Energy prices

The spokesperson added that President Anastasiades will also inform his counterparts on “measures taken by Cyprus as a result of the increase in energy and electricity prices” and that the leaders will discuss the European Commission’s proposals “on how to stabilise and reduce electricity and energy prices over the coming months”.

Energy as well as the pandemic are scheduled to be discussed during the leaders’ afternoon working session. The leaders are expected to touch upon the issue of the rule of law in Poland during the same working session.

On migration, which is scheduled to be discussed on Friday, President Anastasiades is expected to bring up “the increase of migration flows and the pressures on Cyprus, with most of these flows passing illegally through the Green Line”, Pelekanos explained.

President Anastasiades will reiterate that the main cause of this situation is Turkey, since the country “not only does not ensure the prevention of migration flows towards Cyprus, on the basis of its obligations under the 2016 Joint Statement, but instead instrumentalises and encourages them” the spokesperson added, noting that the President will also discuss the practical contribution of the EU and other member states to the efforts undertaken by Cypriot authorities.

Cyprus Problem

The government spokesperson also added that President Anastasiades will brief his counterparts on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus Problem.

More specifically, the President will brief the leaders on his recent meeting with UNSG Antonio Guterres and T/C leader Ersin Tatar in New York, as well as on the delay in the appointment of a UN special envoy.

The President will also brief the leaders on “new Turkish provocations in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus and on the continuation of illegal actions by the occupying forces in the fenced-off area of Famagusta” he noted.

Finally, the President is expected to inform the leaders of the decision of the Turkish Cypriots to grant to the occupying forces a Greek Cypriot - owned piece of land, owned by Greek Cypriots, near the Cape of Apostolos Andreas. Pelekanos added that according to media reports, this piece of land is expected to be used in the context of Turkish plans to create a nautical base in the area.
