Greek Cypriot Side Focused On The Resumption Of The Negotiations, House President Tells Israeli Ambassador

Greek Cypriot Side Focused On The Resumption Of The Negotiations, House President Tells Israeli Ambassador

President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, has told the Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus, Oren Anolik, that the Greek Cypriot side remains focused on the aim of the resumption of the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions and the agreed UN negotiating framework and the European principles and values.

Speaking during a meeting they had on Tuesday, Demetriou also said that the Turkish side`s demands for a "two state" solution will not be accepted by the Greek Cypriot side, the EU and the international community.

According to a House press release, Demetriou thanked the Ambassador for the position of principles which Israel maintains on the Cyprus problem and the intensifying Turkish provocations against the Republic of Cyprus.

The increased dynamic in the relations between Cyprus and Israel both at the bilateral level and the trilateral framework of the cooperation among Cyprus, Israel and Greece was noted during the meeting, as well as particularly the added value of the interparliamentary dialogue and cooperation in promoting the aim for the prevailing of conditions of peace, stability and welfare in the region.

The House President said that the parliaments of the three countries have a very important role to play, both in addressing challenges related to the broader region and the common challenges beyond that, as climate change.

Demetriou underlined the significance of reinforcing exchanges between the parliaments of Cyprus and Israel at all levels and in this framework the readiness of the House of Representatives to undertake common initiatives and actions in fields of common interest.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Numerous UN-backed talks to reunite the island have failed to yield results.
