Efforts For A Just And Viable Solution To The Cyprus Issue Must Continue, Says House President

We must continue united in efforts for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, said on Sunday House President Annita Demetriou, during the memorial service of the EOKA liberation struggle heroes of Paralimni, noting that there is no room for complacency.

She said that part of Cyprus remains occupied due to the barbaric Turkish invasion and 40 thousand Turkish troops still threaten the national survival and the historic continuation of Cypriot Hellenism.

Completely outside any framework of legitimacy or European principle, the occupation power is now methodically and openly implementing its plans aimed at partitioning and creating a Turkish protectorate in Cyprus, she added.

Under Turkey’s guidance, she noted, the Turkish Cypriot side insists on the creation of two states and continues to undermine any prospects to resume the substantial dialogue, in the framework of UN resolutions and the negotiating acquis, as agreed over the years.

At the same time, Ankara continues not only to provoke and break the law, but also to extend its actions by constantly creating new fait accompli in Famagusta and the fenced off area of Varosha, with the obvious aim to fully colonise the area.

The provocations continue, she said, in the continue in the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone and is now going ahead to take over the Apostolos Andreas cape, turning it into a military zone, a huge area next to occupied Rizokarpaso.

Nevertheless, she said, it is no time for complacency. “We must continue united the effort for a fair and viable solution, based on UN resolutions and EU principles and values because far from any political or ideological views we all agree that the partition and perpetuation of the occupation cannot be the fate of this land and its people”, Demetriou added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Numerous UN-backed talks to reunite the island have failed to yield results.
