Ambassador Reaffirms Czech Republic's Support To A Cyprus Settlement Based On UN Resolutions

Ambassador Reaffirms Czech Republic's Support To A Cyprus Settlement Based On UN Resolutions

Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Cyprus, Vladimír Němec, reaffirmed, on Tuesday, the steadfast support of his country to a Cyprus settlement on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions, during a meeting he had with House President, Annita Demetriou.

According to a House press release, the House President expressed sincere appreciation for the long-standing position of principles which the Czech Republic maintains on the Cyprus problem and efforts to solve it. Moreover, she underlined the attachment of the Greek Cypriot side to the aim of a Cyprus solution on the basis of the international law, the UN relevant resolutions and the EU principles and values.

Referring to the ongoing Turkish provocations, particularly in the fenced off area of Famagusta, the House President underlined that the Turkish side`s demand for a "two state" solution in Cyprus cannot be accepted.

During the meeting, Demetriou and Němec underlined the friendly relations between Cyprus and the Czech Republic and expressed, according to the press release, the common will to further enhance cooperation in fields of mutual interest, that will contribute to the exchange of the best practices in significant sectors to the benefit of both peoples.

Particular emphasis was given to the importance of further enhancing cooperation and exchanges between the parliaments of Cyprus and the Czech Republic at all levels, the press release concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Numerous rounds of talks under the UN aegis to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results.

UN Security Council resolution 550 (1984) considers any attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN. Resolution 789 (1992) also urges that with a view to the implementation of resolution 550 (1984), the area at present under the control of the United Nations Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus be extended to include Varosha.

Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, announced in July 2021 a partial lifting of the military status in Varosha.

On October 8, 2020, the Turkish side opened part of the fenced area of Varosha, following an announcement made in Ankara on October 6. Both the UN Secretary-General and the EU expressed concern, while the UN Security Council called for the reversal of this course of action.
