The new Naturalisation bill was earlier this week submitted to the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus for discussion and approval.
The proposed law streamlines Cyprus’ naturalisation legislation with other European countries and updates the current law.
While amendments may be made before the final adoption of the proposed law, which is expected to be discussed by the Parliament in Spring 2023, its current main objectives are to secure the following:
1. To reduce the required period of residency to Cyprus to 5 years if the applicant holds a Greek language A2 level Certificate.
2. To reduce the required period of residency to Cyprus to 4 years if the applicant holds a Greek language B1 level Certificate.
3. To allow spouses/children to apply along with the main applicant if they complete the same minimum period of residency and the same language requirements.
4. To allow stays abroad up to 90 days per calendar year (only stays abroad of more than 90 days to be deducted in calculating the minimum period of residency in Cyprus).
5. To adopt a fast-track procedure for the examination of the applications.
