Cyprus is 5th Safest Country in the World

Cyprus is 5th Safest Country in the World

Cyprus is ranked 5th safest country in the world in a new survey looking at population, CO2 emissions and life expectancy as well as the number, per 100,000 people, of national police personnel, traffic deaths, thefts and assaults.

The safest country, according to the ValuePenguin survey, is Switzerland, followed by Singapore, Spain, Japan and Cyprus. The island also tops the list of the safest small countries (those with a population of less than 5 million).

The report says of Cyprus:

“The Republic of Cyprus made it this high because it bested the aforementioned four cities in two categories: It ranked 21st overall in national police personnel per 100,000 people (with 466), and it ranked 22nd in thefts per 100,000 people (with 111). The number of cops in a country isn't necessarily linked to safety -- and we weighted it accordingly -- but having fewer thefts is a good sign regardless. The third island country among the top five, Cyprus had essentially been divided in two since 1974 but has been progressing toward reunification.”

The report lists 106 countries which provided their own data, which means that there are some glaring omissions, such as the UK, and anomalies such as the fact that Syria is ranked 55th.

ValuePenguin describes itself as an organisation that “focuses on providing high quality resources to help consumers understand the topics they're interested in. Whether it’s building visual tools to explain data or publishing in-depth research, our goal is to provide objective analysis to help guide you to the best decision. In the process of developing our research, we focus on Value, assessing whether the return of a particular purchase or decision is worth the cost or risk of that option, and how this stacks up with the other possible choices you may have.”
