Attorney General Discusses Cancelled Cyprus Investment Programme With Reynders

Cyprus` positions as regards the granting of the Cyprus citizenship to investors were discussed during a meeting Attorney General George Savvides had Thursday in Brussels with EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

According to a press release by the Law Office, Attorney General and his assistant Savvas Angelides met with the Commissioner and presented Nicosia`s positions about the granting of the citizenships, which is the subject of an infringement procedure and they presented the legal and factual points raised in the reply to the reasoned opinion of the European Commission.

In addition, Savvides pointed out all the actions taken by Cyprus at national level and the cancellation of the Cyprus Investment Program following a decision by the Cabinet in October 2020 as well as the ongoing process for the revocation of citizenships, based on the implementation of the recommendations of the Investigative Committee appointed by the Attorney General in September 2020.

Attorney General said that a number of cases related to the Programme have occurred and are under criminal investigation by the Police.

Commissioner Reynders thanked the Attorney General and his assistant for the thorough information on the matter, stating that the information provided would be used for further evaluation by the Commission.

During the meeting they also exchanged views on the functioning of the European Public Prosecutor`s Office and on EUROJUST and Savvides reaffirmed that Cyprus will fully cooperate with all European institutions in matters falling under the Law Office of Cyprus.

Reynders accepted an invitation to visit Cyprus and the date will be set at a later stage.
