Cyprus Forum 2021: Sustainable Policies In The Spotlight

Cyprus Forum 2021: Sustainable Policies In The Spotlight

The second Cyprus Forum, which took place on Saturday, 2 October 2021 proved to be a success once again, with over 500 individuals attending in person along with hundreds of online participants. The Cyprus Forum, on Launching a New Sustainable Horizon: Cyprus 2040, was organised by the non-profit NGO Oxygono, in association with the Delphi Economic Forum.

More than 65 speakers, both from Cyprus and abroad, discussed, virtually and physically, a wide range of topics related to the sustainable development of Cyprus by 2040.

The Cyprus Forum aims to become a lever and a catalyst for change through discussions and debate leading to commitments, actions and ultimately outcomes that will improve and promote sustainable and socially responsible policy in Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, something that was successfully achieved via the discussions which took place on Saturday.

Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides, Founder and Head of the Cyprus Forum Steering Committee, expressed his satisfaction with the fact that the Forum has already managed to become a point of reference in the debate on issues related to the development of the Cypriot economy and society.

In her address, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, talked about the sustainable development of the island following the pandemic, and the urgent need for a reexamination of the development model. Specifically, she stressed that the well-being of Cypriot citizens must be a priority when it comes to efforts being made towards a sustainable recovery and also as regards the urgent need for businesses and consumers to switch to more sustainable production and consumption models.

Furthermore, Citizen’s Commissioner Panayiotis Sentonas stressed the importance of such events when it comes to democracy and social dialogue, explaining that citizens are paving the way for a new development model.

In a video message, European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas discussed the role of citizens in terms of sustainable development in Europe, and noted the important part that Cyprus has played in regional peace and prosperity.

Significant issues were raised during the Cyprus Forum, concerning all aspects society such as health, the economy, entrepreneurship, shipping, the environment, equality and technology.

All Forum sessions are now available online. You may access these via the Cyprus Forum website or via the Cyprus Forum YouTube Channel
