Cyprus Chief Scientist And IDEA Startup Accelerator Join Hands

Cyprus Chief Scientist And IDEA Startup Accelerator Join Hands

Aiming to promote Cyprus as a regional innovation hub, the country`s Chief Scientist Nikolas Mastroyiannopoulos and chairman of the board of startup incubator-accelerator IDEA Charis Pouangare signed on Tuesday a Memorandum of Understanding.

During a press conference IDEA also inaugurated its 6th cycle for new Startups in the context of which 12 different teams in the areas of shipping, artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, entertainment and catering, culture, financial technology, smart cities, tourism, medical technology and organic food production have been selected to take part in its training programme.

In an address, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Kyriacos Kokkinos said that the goal of a research and innovation strategy which is being prepared by the Deputy Ministry in cooperation with the Research and Innovation Foundation is to create a comprehensive framework promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

The goal, he pointed out, "is to facilitate turning ideas to new innovative products and services, new sustainable businesses, even new markets, with an impact to our country`s economy and society."

Enhancing cooperation between research and academic private and public organisations as well as attracting international scientific and technological companies and start-ups in order to establish Cyprus as a regional business centre in these area is high on the agenda, Kokkinos noted.

"The mission and services of IDEA as an incubator and accelerator and an innovation centre are fully in line with the State`s goals," he added.

On his part, Mastroyiannopoulos said that that the MoU`s signature constitutes "a milestone for everyone who aspires to be a proponent of Cyprus` start-up entrepreneurial scene and all innovative visionaries who want to make a difference."

The aim of the cooperation, he added, is firstly to enhance and develop Cyprus` innovative entrepreneurship, boosting particularly the young generation and seeking through various targeted actions and services to offer what is necessary to allow it to move forward, to innovate and contribute to shaping a bright future for the country."

IDEA, he noted, "is a valuable ally in the effort for a dynamic shift towards a new growth model based on research and innovation."

In a short address, Pouangare said that implementing a careful strategy in the past 6 years, IDEA has up to date supported 70 new start-ups, it has been the recipient of an EU award and has gained a leadership role in the Cypriot ecosystem. This was possible through an intensive orientation for cooperation with both public and private sectors.
