Warhol, Andy
Top of the pop art movement, Andy Warhol carved a name for himself in art’s history, thanks to his exploration of artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement, leading to the development of the visual art movement, pop art.
Encompassing many forms of media – including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photograph, and more – Warhol’s studio, The Factory, was a famous gathering place towards which distinguished intellectuals, playwrights, celebrities and bohemians gravitated.
The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is $105 million, for a 1963 canvas titled Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster).
Most recently, Warhol's Mao (1973) was among the highlights of a contemporary art sale at Sotheby's London on February 12, achieving £7.5m ($12.4m), which represents a growth of 22.9% per annum on the £421,500 ($632,218) it sold for at Sotheby's London in 2000.
