EY Cyprus has prepared an educational VAT Seminar, under the funding of the EU Commission, currently delivered to Tax Department Officers (Direct Taxation Division) and, to among other attendees, including Tax Tribunal members. The aim of the seminar is to raise awareness on VAT matters and provide an insight on the application of the VAT legislation and rules to Inland Revenue Officers, who have moved under the same roof with the VAT Service officers post unification of the two Departments. Tax Department Officers will gain an understanding of the differences between direct taxation and VAT and simultaneously identify areas of common work with their colleagues of the Indirect Taxation Division.
The seminars would take place at the Cyprus Academy of Public Administration in Nicosia and EY Limassol Offices until 8 June 2017. Amongst the presenters Philippos Raptopoulos, Head of Tax at EY Cyprus, and George Liasis, Head of Indirect Tax, discuss with the attendees the comparison of VAT and Direct Taxation while stressing the VAT functions and principles.
Philippos Raptopoulos considers the ‘Training on VAT aspects of paramount importance for Direct Taxation Officers and will inevitably assist them in drawing a collaboration line with their Indirect Taxation Colleagues. Such cooperation is strongly supported by EY Cyprus which undertook to train throughout a two year period all the Tax Department Officers on VAT and Direct Tax accordingly.’
According to George Liasis,‘Participants at the VAT Seminars are encouraged to actively engage in discussion and solve exercises after the delivery of each theme session in an attempt not only to gain knowledge but also apply the rules and recognize the need to identify and raise VAT issues with their colleagues of the ex-VAT Service. Presenting on the VAT legislation to Direct Tax Officers is indeed an excellent and challenging experience and with the assistance of VAT officers present in the classroom, we are able to provide an all-rounded knowledge on the VAT law and its features.’
EY Cyprus regularly presents training seminars to its clients and the public with the next two on 31 March (EY Nicosia Offices) and 10 April (EY Limassol Offices) on VAT Developing Knowledge and Common Mistakes.
