Demetriades Discusses Prospects for Younger Generation within the Shipping Industry

Minister of Transport, Communications and Work, Marios Demetriades, was a guest at the radio show "It's All about Shipping!" * on Thursday, 6th April, 2017. The particular radio show aims to provide information on shipping related matters and the prospects within the industry, with particular emphasis on the younger audience and is broadcasted on the radio station of the  Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), Cut-Radio 95,2. The radio show is produced and presented by Gina Panayiotou, Legal Manager of the Legal Department of the shipping company Intership Navigation Co. Ltd., with Constandinos Papaminas, a final year student in the field of shipping studies at the University, in support the non-profit organization YoungShip Cyprus.*

The Minister stressed the importance of the maritime sector for our country, explaining that it is a sector that requires no special needs, offering much more than it “receives.” Thus being the reason, that upon assuming his position as Minister, he gave this sector due importance and emphasis. Additionally, the Minster provided comprehensive answers to the issues upon which he was called to answer, including the possible creation of a sub-ministry of Shipping, the preliminary work done in this respect in order to be duly prepared for immediate assumption of duties, the high quality level of shipping and related services offered by our country, the development prospects and the government objectives to further develop this sector as well as the measures taken by the government to support young people who wish to enter the industry, such as establishing availability of technical studies, information programs and available subsidies.

Furthermore, the Minister, when asked about the advice he would give the young people who want to succeed in this industry and more generally, stated that in order to make a difference, it takes hard work, determination, patience, perseverance, thinking out of the box and continually surpassing your limits.

It is also worth noting, that the Minister expressed his apparent support and congratulated the production of the radio show for this initiative, as he strongly believes in the skills of the younger generation, as he has previously declared himself that one of the reasons he accepted the position of Minister was to prove that young people have a lot to give! As quoted during the radio show, "young people are the future and we want them to be able to stay in Cyprus, find work, establish a career and be able to pursue their dreams!"
