The financial crisis has proven to be one of the most significantly challenging periods for banking institutions worldwide.


Faced with necessary changes in regulation, tighter capital requirements, non-performing loans and stunted revenue growth – not to mention widespread distrust in the traditional structure of banking institutions – Europe's banks have been forced to create an arsenal of prudent survival tactics.


Despite the challenges they are facing, many banks have exceeded the naysayers' expectations in the light of the economic downturn, having balanced a relatively healthy fiscal performance with adequate alterations to monetary policy in 2013.


Global Finance presented many of these successful institutions in its recent World's Best Banks Survey
