Paphos Mayor to Meet Governor of Alexandria for Strengthening Ties with Egypt

Paphos Mayor to Meet Governor of Alexandria for Strengthening Ties with Egypt

A three-member delegation from Paphos municipality will leave for Alexandria in Egypt on Tuesday, July 11, to strengthen ties between the two cities.

Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos will head the team that will meet with the Governor of Alexandria Mohamed Sultan on Wednesday to develop relations between the two historic cities, according to a spokesman for Paphos municipality, Cyprus Mail reports.

“This meeting will see the municipality of Paphos further expand the twinning network that has taken place during the last two years with the cities in neighbouring countries of the Eastern Mediterranean,” he said.

He added that the main purpose of the various twinnings is to develop a close and fruitful cooperation in the fields of culture, entrepreneurship and new technologies.

“In 2016, the Paphos Municipality completed its twinning with Jordan, Amman and in March 2017 with Herzliya in Israel,” he said.

During the two-day visit, the mayor will also have meetings with the Arab University of Science and Technology to promote collaboration in the fields of European programmes, new technologies and business.

The spokesman said that the mayor will also visit the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the city’s historical library, and meet with delegations from the Cypriot and Greek communities.

Alexandria is Egypt’s second largest city after Cairo, and a major economic centre covering around 32 km along the country’s Mediterranean Sea coast.

From the late 18th century, Alexandria became a major centre for international shipping and one of the most important trading centres in the world.

The delegation will return to Cyprus on Friday afternoon.
