Natasa Pilides: We Aim to Consolidate Cyprus’ Position as a World-Class Maritime Centre

Natasa Pilides, Deputy Minister of Shipping in Cyprus, spoke at the 9th Nicosia Economic Congress on April 18, about the development of the shipping industry as well as the strategy, mission and goals of the Shipping Deputy Ministry.

According to Pilides, the mission of the Shipping Deputy Ministry is to embrace changes so as to consolidate Cyprus’ position as a world-class maritime centre and to remain the same in providing excellence of service. “Providing clarity, certainty and stability is most definitely the backbone of a successful strategy, which underpins all our goals and actions,” she noted.

Pilides further pointed out the actions necessary to safeguard competitiveness in the shipping industry. These include the smooth and successful prolongation of the Cyprus Tonnage Tax System, the rationalization of merchant shipping fees and taxes, revising government policy on the registration of ships under the Cyprus flag. the reduction of bureaucracy and offering a one-stop service.

Natasa Pilides also discussed the significance of enhancing international relations by building alliances and strengthening our negotiating position and role in the decision-making processes at European and international level. She added that enhancing maritime safety and environmental protection is of crucial importance which is why the Deputy Ministry is developing a Blue Growth strategy. This aims to support sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors as a whole.

To comply with the mechanism of preparedness and contingency planning measures and in order to mitigate any short- term impacts and any possible disruption of a no deal Brexit, the Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus has recently published all the relevant to shipping matters Information Notices with steps to be taken, as issued by the European Commission.
