ISOP Teacher Attends the United Nations Climate Change Summit

ISOP Teacher Attends the United Nations Climate Change Summit

During the first two weeks of December, nearly 200 countries attended the United Nations Climate Summit, known as COP25, in Madrid, Spain, with the aim of encouraging a global response to the climate crisis.

Marina Flevotomas, Humanities and Geography teacher at the International School of Paphos (ISOP), has been attending the COPs since 2011, first as part of the British Council and as of 2014, as part of the Cyprus delegation. Focused on Women and Gender, Education as well as Loss and Damage, Flevotomas dedicated her attention towards supporting the efforts of youth, women and Indigenous peoples.

Presenting in various forums and panels on the importance of educating girls and women, Flevotomas stressed the need to continue global efforts of educating girls; thus, ensuring equity and equality consequently empowering resilience to climate impacts. Women are the world's stewards of food, soil, trees, and water. Women have a greater capacity to cope with climate impacts. Furthermore, enabling affordable access to schools and addressing health and safety issues, enables girls to become decision-makers of their future while protecting people and the planet.

Τhe Cyprus Government also played an active role in the summit, presenting the Cyprus Climate Change Initiative, which aims to develop a Regional Action Plan addressing specific needs and challenges that face countries from the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region.

Flevotomas brought her experience back to ISOP, where she leads the Climate Change Solutions after-school Club and integrates climate action based lessons into her Humanities and Geography classes with the hope of raising awareness and consciousness. Flevotomas believes that youth are essential to finding solutions to the climate crisis and is inspired by her students, their zest and motivation for a healthy, just and livable future.
