Eight Countries Participate In UK’s Strategic Leadership Programme

Eight Countries Participate In UK’s Strategic Leadership Programme

The Defence Academy of the United Kingdom and Cranfield University successfully delivered a third regional Strategic Leadership Programme in Cyprus from 12-14 October 2020.

Attendees from Cyprus, Greece, the UK, and UNFICYP (Serbia, Hungary, Brazil, Argentina & Slovak Republic), along with colleagues from Cyprus’ Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, the National Guard, the Customs Department and the Police participated in the three-day programme.  The course was opened by Cyprus’ Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Zervakis and closed by Defence Minister Petrides who provided the closing address alongside British High Commissioner Stephen Lillie.

Colonel Richard Maundrell, Defence Academy of the United Kingdom and Dr Bryan Watters and Dr Ifti Zaidi of Cranfield University delivered the programme. This was the first time that the course had been delivered virtually from the UK to a prioritised partner country. COVID-19 prevented regional partners from participating on the course as on the previous programme in February 2020. Speakers included Lieutenant General Zervakis and Maj General Cheryl Pearce, Force Commander of UNFICYP.

British High Commissioner Stephen Lillie said: “The Strategic Leadership Programme, delivered for a third time here in Cyprus, is an effective joint training and learning platform for our UK participants. The course is not only an important capacity-building tool, it is also provides an excellent opportunity to establish friendships and network. The feedback from delegates has been very positive for the two previous courses. Naturally, we have also adapted our delivery method to accommodate COVID regulations, but are delighted to be able to deliver the Strategic Leadership Programme in new and innovative ways.”

This, the second SLP in Cyprus this year, comes at the same time as the arrival of HMS Albion, the Royal Navy’s flagship, to participate in an extensive programme of exercises and training with Cypriot forces throughout October and November.
