KPMG Report Presents Top Teams in Football Player Sales

KPMG Report Presents Top Teams in Football Player Sales

Within the context of its innovative sport advisory services, KPMG Football Benchmark - which provides in-depth analysis of the business performance of football clubs – KPMG presented last week the results of the Player Trading Game report.

The report examined the accounting treatment of footballers’ transactions for more than 150 football clubs for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons. The top twenty European clubs are from five different leagues (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Germany) and are considered as “net sellers”. “Possibly unsurprisingly, no English clubs are included in the European Top 20 by player trading”, Andrea Sartori, KPMG’s Global Head of Sports stressed. “This is likely attributable to the profile and sizeable broadcasting income of the Premier League they enjoy compared to their European counterparts. Such features remove to some extent the necessity to leverage player trading activity”.

Among those who profited the most from player sales are the two Portuguese teams, Benfica and Porto with 65 million euro and 58.2 million respectively. On the other hand, teams which have invested more on reinforces, belong to a different group and are considered as “buyers” - Manchester United and Manchester City lead this group with -238.9 million euro and -171.9 million respectively.

Christos Vasiliou, Deputy Managing Director and Head of Advisory of KPMG in Cyprus, stated that “transfer spending is not expected to decrease soon, hence the long-term viability of these record-breaking transfers need to be continuously examined”. At the same time, Christophoros Anayiotos, Board Member and Head of Deal Advisory of KPMG Cyprus noted that “requests for sports advisory services are gradually growing”.
