India-EU Trade In Goods: €1.4 Billion Deficit In 2019

India-EU Trade In Goods: €1.4 Billion Deficit In 2019

India was the EU's 10th largest partner for imports (2% of total extra-EU imports) and the 11th largest for EU exports (2% of total extra-EU exports) in 2019, according to the Eurostat.

The EU ran a trade surplus with India (meaning that it exported more than it imported) from 2009 to 2018. This trade surplus turned into a deficit in 2019, when it reached €1.4 billion.

EU exports to India were dominated by "machinery and vehicles", "other manufactured products" and "chemicals", which together accounted for 90% of EU exports to India. These categories also dominated imports, making up 81% of EU imports from India. At a more detailed level, "pearls and (semi-) precious stones” were the EU’s most exported product to India, while the most imported product from India were “petroleum oils other than crude”.

Germany: main trade partner with India

Among the EU Member States, Germany was the largest importer of goods from India (€7.5 billion) and also the largest exporter in 2019 (€11.9 billion).
