Syllouris: Cyprus Should Utilise Its EU Member-State Status to Exert Pressure on Turkey

Cyprus utilising its European identity should exert pressure on Turkey to change the future developments on the Cyprus question, House of Representatives President Demetris Syllouris has said, adding a Cyprus settlement remains our priority.

“The Cyprus problem, as our priority, remains the most important issue on the present and the future of our country,” Syllouris said addressing a national memorial service to commemorate the heroes of the community of Kampos during the 1974 coup d’etat and the Turkish invasion, Cyprus News Agency reports.

Speaking in the backdrop of the failure of the Conference of Cyprus in Crans Montana, Switzerland, Syllouris said Turkey’s priorities seem to focus on the strengthening of the occupying regime, illegally and unilaterally declared in northern Cyprus in 1983, and the political and diplomatic exploitation of the resolution process aiming to have political gains with or without a settlement to the problem.

“Each time Turkey leads the talks to an impasse, proving that it has no intention to compromise and put an end to continuous violations. As in the last conference, Turkey revealed its real intentions, which are contrary to the international law and the UN decisions, while we continue paying the heavy price of occupation,” he said.

The House President stressed that we all should agree that after a settlement Turkey should have no influence and presence in the new state of affairs.

“The reaching of a solution of our national problem should be based on international law, European values and principles and respect the rights of people, states and all citizens irrespective of language, religion and race,” he added.
