Swedish Facilitated Dialogue within the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process

The Director and Executive Coordinator of the Office of the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process under the Auspices of the Embassy of Sweden, Salpy Eskidjian Weiderud, will today be awarded The Secretary’s Inaugural International Religious Freedom Award by the US State Department. Eskidjian Weiderud receives the award in recognition of her brave efforts to protect, promote and advance freedom of religion or belief.

Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Margot Wallström, commented on the award in a statement by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. “Salpy Eskidjian Weiderud’s tireless efforts for peace and reconciliation in Cyprus are groundbreaking and widely acknowledged in Cyprus and beyond. The Swedish Government will continue to support her work to promote dialogue, human rights and equality in the peace process”.

The Religious Track is a peacebuilding initiative with the religious leaders of Cyprus. The initiative started in 2009 and has rendered important breakthroughs fostering interreligious, cross-community communication and cooperation. Since
2018, the UN Security Council Resolution on Cyprus highlights the efforts of the
Religious Track.

“It is an honor to receive this award in recognition of the religious leaders of Cyprus’ joint efforts to promote peace and reconciliation with the support of the Government of Sweden”, says Salpy Eskidjian Weiderud.

The high-level award ceremony takes place during the second Annual Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom in Washington DC from July 16-18. The award is presented to honor extraordinary advocates of religious freedom from around the world. The ceremony will be broadcasted live on  on at 18:00 local time.
