Spehar: meeting with President Anastasiades was constructive

Elizabeth Spehar, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus met on Wednesday, July 10, with the President of Cyrus Nicos Anastasiades, in Limassol, ahead of a report the UN Secretary-General is expected to submit regarding the peacekeeping mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the Cyprus News Agency reports.

Speaking after the meeting, which lasted for about an hour, Spehar said it was constructive.I met with the President and saw that he is fine, the UN top official told reporters, referring to the President’s recovery from a surgery he underwent recently. She went on to say that the meeting was constructive and that she would meet with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci this evening.

The meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou and the Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Kyriacos Kouros.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The last round of negotiations, in the summer of 2017, at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

Turkey issued in May a navigational telex, announcing its intention to start drilling off Cyprus until September 3. Since May 4, the Turkish drill ship “Fatih” is anchored in an area that falls within the EEZ and continental shelf of the Republic of Cyprus.

A second Turkish drill ship, “Yavuz”, arrived off the island’s northeastern coast on Monday.
