Prodromou to Take Part in Francophonie Summit in Yerevan

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou will take part at the Summit of the Francophonie International Organisation, which takes place in Yerevan, Armenia, on October 11 and 12, during which a resolution on the peace and stability in the french speaking world is expected to be approved with a reference on the situation in Cyprus.

Prodromou, who travels today from Crete to Yerevan, will represent Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, a presidency press release says.

Among other matters the Summit is expected to discuss human rights issues in the countries and associated members of the organisation, the Cyprus News Agency reports. Cyprus is an associated member of the organisation.

Heads of state and government will adopt the "Yerevan Declaration" which will tackle a wide array of issues mainly to do with the principles and values of the organisation and the main subject matters that concern it.

"The declaration is expected to include wording in favour of the respect of international law and the UN Charter, human rights, the gender equality and the international criminal justice," the press release adds.

It will also include matters such as combating terrorism, the immigration problem, sustainable development, climate change and the promotion of the french language.

Among resolutions set to be adopted a resolution on the peace and stability in the french speaking world is expected to be adopted "which will include a paragraph on the situation in Cyprus and the continued division of the island," the press release says.

The Government Spokesman returns to Cyprus on Friday evening.
