Prodromou: Anastasiades Expects Akinci to Demonstrate Willingness for Continuation of Talks

Prodromou: Anastasiades Expects Akinci to Demonstrate Willingness for Continuation of Talks

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades will express the willingness of the Greek Cypriot side to resume settlement talks, during his April 16 informal dinner with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has stated. He expressed moreover hope that the Turkish Cypriot side will also demonstrate the necessary political will in order to reengage in negotiations for a Cyprus solution.

For any talks to resume, Turkey needs to terminate first all illegal and provocative actions, Prodromou underlined, in statements at the Presidential Palace. He was speaking after a meeting between the President of Cyprus and the Greek Cypriot Heads of the Bicommunal Technical Committees, held in order to assess their work.

“We stand at a critical juncture. Our effort at the dinner next Monday is to start again our dialogue, after stating the willingness of our side to resume negotiations from where they were left” Prodromou said.

Asked about the issues the two leaders are going to discuss during dinner, next Monday, he said that talk might also involve the decision for the opening of crossings in Deryneia and Lefka, taken almost three years ago.

Despite the fact that there has been some progress, the matter also requires the decision of both leaders, Prodromou said while noting that the process is “on track”.

Speaking about the work produced by the Technical Committees, the Government Spokesman noted that there is remarkable progress in some of them. Technical Committees are part of a Cyprus solution on a community level and they will continue their work, he said, while expressing hope that negotiations will also continue on a political level, the Cyprus News Agency reports.

Prodromou said finally that political party leaders will meet on Thursday afternoon with the President of the Republic, in order to exchange views ahead of the April 16 dinner. “It will be an opportunity [for the President] to have their views before attending dinner with the Turkish Cypriot leader” he noted.

Asked finally about the contacts of US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Europe and NATO, Thomas Goffus, in Nicosia, Prodromou said he was meeting with Defence Minister Savvas Angelides mainly to discuss bilateral issues.

President Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem. The latest round of talks took place in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans Montana but failed to yield any results.
