Nikos Christodoulides: Stresses Need for A Political Resolution of the Conflict in Syria

Any agreement terminating illegal actions is a particularly positive development, Cyprus Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said on Friday, underlining the need for a political resolution of the conflict, the CNA reports.

In statements on the sidelines of the Limassol Economic Forum, Christodoulides, who was invited to comment on the US - Turkey ceasefire agreement for Syria, said that "any agreement or co-understanding leading to the termination of illegal activites, as for example the Turkish invasion of Syria, and generally, leads to the political resolution of the crisis, and it is something which we welcome, which we consider as a positive development."

Christodoulides noted that "we need to wait and see how yesterday`s discussions between the US Vice President and the Turkish President are being reflected and see the positions of the others involved in this crisis."

He went on to say that it is important to see the position of the Syrian government and of the international actors in this crisis such as Russia, noting that the forthcoming meeting of the leaders of Turkey and Russia is particularly important.

"Taking into consideration that Cyprus` shores are only 56 miles away from those of Syria our hope is that calm and stability will prevail in Syria and for a process to begin that will lead to a political resolution of the conflict," he added.

Christodoulides said that "what we are insterested in is to have a result that will lead to stability in Syria, so that the countries in the region as well, including the Republic of Cyprus, will not be negatively affected by the developments in Syria."

Asked if the agreement about the ceasefire was delayed, the Foreign Minister noted that "the Republic of Cyprus and the EU expressed from the very beginning the view that any actions as the Turkish invasion, which lead to a humanitarian crisis and an undesirable situation, must be terminated."

He stressed that the Republic of Cyprus as an EU member states wants a political settlement in Syria.
