Nicos Anastasiades: Room For Progress In Communication Technology Services

Nicos Anastasiades: Room For Progress In Communication Technology Services

There have been significant advances in communication technology services, President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday, while pointing to the need for more progress in this area, CNA reported.

The President was speaking during the reappointment ceremony of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation George Michaelides and the Deputy Commissioner Petros Galides, at the Presidential Palace.

Addressing the ceremony, the President of Cyprus referred to both officials’ previous successful term at the office, while noting their hard work in performing their duties. He also said that significant work has been done in their area of competence, which is relevant to the government’s coherent policy aiming at bringing Cyprus’ legislation in line with EU legislation and at promoting competition in the area of electronic communications, postal services, digital security and cyber security.

With close cooperation and by taking into account the suggestions of the Office of the Commissioner, important progress has been made, the President underlined and said that after the appointment of the Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, much more needs to be done.

The President referred in particular to the development of fixed and mobile broadband networks, providing coverage for the total population, and in promoting high-speed networks creating the basis for the country’s digital transformation.

He also referred to the National Cyber Security Strategy, describing the necessary protection measures for all critical IT infrastructure in the public, semi-state and private sectors and the participation of the Office in five European programs, aiming to acquire expertise in cyber security.

The rapid development of communications and technology and their potential benefits for the economy, the society and for the people strengthen the government’s resolve, the President said, adding that upgrading the sector is among the government’s priorities.

Taking the floor, Michaelides said that during his previous term, his Office focused on promoting competition and investment in the relevant sector across the Republic of Cyprus, while protecting consumer rights.

The Office managed to create an even more competitive market, while establishing Cyprus among the countries that are active in shaping the European regulation framework, he stated. Michaelides noted finally that cyber security in Cyprus is seen by the competent European authority as promising and said that the country should further its technological advances in order to reap economic benefits.
