Kadis: ΕU Should Protect Products With Geographic Origin Designation In Trade Agreements

The EU should include a clause for mutual protection for products with geographic origin designation in its trade agreements with third countries, Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Costas Kadis has said.

According to an official press release, Kadis took part in a virtual EU Ministers of Agriculture meeting which focused on trade agreements with third countries, as well as the effects of the Covid pandemic on agriculture.

In his intervention, Kadis said that in its trade agreements with third countries, the EU should incorporate a clause securing the mutual protection of existing and new products with geographic origin designation.

This need which has been highlighted by many EU Ministers has particular importance for Cyprus in view of a possible approval of Halloumi as of protected designation of origin, the press release said.

Furthermore, Kadis expressed satisfaction over the agreement reached between the EU and the UK on the latter’s exit from the EU. Cyprus has significant trade ties with the UK particularly concerning agricultural products and we expect these ties to continue in the context of the new relationship between the EU and the UK, he said.
