Fokaides: Europe Needs to Be Stronger and Safer For New Security Challenges

Fokaides: Europe Needs to Be Stronger and Safer For New Security Challenges

‘There is no doubt that this is an important day for Europe’, stated Cyprus Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides, on Monday 13 November, entering the European Peoples` Party (EPP) Defence Ministers` informal meeting preceding the regular Foreign Affairs Council, where PESCO was signed by 23 EU member states.

"The vanguards of European Union have dreamed of a Defence Union", said Fokaides, explaining that "many others later have proposed ideas and plans, but it is only now that we are making a significant step in the direction of a common defence".

"Europe has to be stronger and safer if it is to respond effectively to the new security challenges and to live up to the expectations of the European citizens. And in order to do that Europe has to be more united", he stressed.

Invited to comment on how Cyprus will interact with PESCO, he explained that "Cyprus is fully committed to this goal", adding that "we will work constructively with our partners in promoting and achieving this new level of ambition for Europe" the Cyprus News Agency reports.
