Cyprus to Support Renewable Energy Sources Targets If Particularities Addressed

Cyprus will support higher targets for the use of Renewable Energy Sources in the EU, only taking into account the particularities of small island Member States, according to the position expressed by the Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism Stelios Chimonas, during the Energy Ministers` Concil, held yesterday 11 June in Luxembourg.

The Director General intervenedduring the working lunch, where the EU28 discussed open issues relating to European Parliament trilogues on legislative proposals for the promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency.

The Director-General agreed with the intention to conclude negotiations quickly with the European Parliament, stressing the need to include specifically designed measures that take into account the specificities of the small island Member States of the Union.

Furthermore the Council agreed on a General Approach to the Regulation on the European Energy Regulator (ACER), while the Commission briefed on the EU`s International Energy Relations and the progress of trilogues with the European Parliament on three legislative proposals for the "Clean Energy for All" Package of Measures, which are related to the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive, the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Proposal for a Regulation for the Governance of the Energy Union.

In his intervention on the issue of the EU`s International Energy Relations, the Director General, emphasized the importance of the Eastern Mediterranean as a new source and new gas supply corridor for the Union.
