Christodoulides Expects Developments Which will Create Conditions for Cyprus Talks Resumption

Christodoulides Expects Developments Which will Create Conditions for Cyprus Talks Resumption

Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, has said that he expects and hopes that there will soon be developments which will create positive conditions for a possible resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem.

Speaking on Thursday during an event organized by Morphou municipality, in Limassol about the state of play as regards the Cyprus problem, Christodoulides reiterated that there is no other choice than for the dialogue to resume in the framework of the UN resolutions, the EU values and principles, “with a view to reverse the current situation, which does not constitute in any case the settlement of the Cyprus problem.”

The Foreign Minister also noted that since 2013 the government worked with a view to highlight Cyprus’ role and importance in the region, as well at the European and international level.

He underlined that Cyprus constitutes a pillar of stability and security in the South-Eastern Mediterranean region, and has the potential to promote EU policies, contributing to finding solutions to problems in the region.

Christodoulides said that Turkey will seek to solve the Cyprus problem once it realises that it will have benefits from a settlement or a cost from the continuation of the current situation. He noted that the government has intensified its effort at the international level with a view to send messages to the Turkish government.

He noted that since the Greek Cypriot side believes that dialogue must resume, President Anastasiades expressed some ideas before the National Council, as food for thought, as regards the way forward with a view to overturn the unacceptable status quo.

Moreover, Christodoulides said that President Anastasiades is ready to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci at any time.
