Christodoulides: Trilateral Cooperation Mechanisms Yield Positive Results

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides has said that the trilateral mechanisms of cooperation that Cyprus establishes with Greece and other countries in the region, bring specific positive results for all participating countries and highlight how important it is for the states of the region to take joint action to address challenges and utilize opportunities in the best possible way.

At the same time there is a bilateral dimension, he said, alluding to the meeting Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis and himself had, in Beirut, with Lebanon’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Energy, during which they agreed to start negotiations on the exploitation of hydrocarbon reserves extending in both sides of the median line between their respective exclusive economic zones.

Christodoulides noted that a time limit has been set for the agreement to be reached by 1 September and added that discussions would begin immediately.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, the Minister said that President Anastasiades would head to Jordan on Sunday “for a very important Summit, the trilateral Summit with Jordan which is expected to discuss very specific matters”.

The agreements that will be signed there, he added, “will highlight this dimension that I have already mention, that joint actions lead to better results”.

Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Cyprus, Mohammad El Fayez, has told the Cyprus News Agency that during the Trilateral Summit among Cyprus, Greece and Jordan that will take place on 14 April in Amman, the leaders of the three countries will sign bilateral and trilateral Memoranda of Understanding.
