Anastasiades Rejects Tatar's Allegations That He Did Not Categorically Rule Out A Two-State Solution

Anastasiades Rejects Tatar's Allegations That He Did Not Categorically Rule Out A Two-State Solution

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has rejected allegations made by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, that during their first meeting at the beginning of November, Anastasiades did not categorically rule out the possibility of a two-state solution in Cyprus.

The President stressed in a written statement that he did not only reject such a solution but also noted that no one at the international level is going to accept this kind of solution.

"Therefore what Tatar is saying, not only does not respond to reality but also creates suspicions about his incentives in view of the UN Secretary-General`s initiative" and "calls into question the sincerity that must prevail between us for the sake of Cyprus," Anastasiades said in his written statement.

Moreover he said that throughout the course of his meeting with Tatar "my position was crystal clear, that a settlement can solely and only be found on the basis of the High Level Agreements, the UN Security Council decisions and resolutions and according to the EU principles and values."

In his statement the President responds to what Tatar "has falsely claimed replying to a question of an English speaking Turkish channel, that allegedly I did not categorically rule out the two-state solution, when he raised it during our first meeting and that I expected his position on this, due to his statements and positions both in the past and during the pre-election period in the occupied areas."

Anastasiades said that "when Tatar raised during our meeting the issue of the two-state solution, I did not only reject it, but I also expressed my arguments and said, among others, apart from what I previously said, that no one at the international level, at the UN and especially at the EU, is not going to accept this kind of solution."

The President noted in his statement that for the last time he calls upon Turkey and Tatar "to realize that a just, functional and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem will not be achieved through distortions, but with a genuine political will to the benefit of the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, on the basis of the High Level Agreements, the UN resolutions and decisions, the convergences achieved at the talks, the Secretary-General`s framework, the international law, as well as the EU principles and values."
