Majority Of Cypriots Do Not Trust The Government And Political Parties

According to a report released by the Eurobarometer, the majority of Cypriots (2019) consider the most important issues the country presently faces as: 

-Cyprus economy (30%, -11% from Spring 2019, the second highest percentage within the EU after Greece, EU 28: 14%).
-Immigration at 29% (+13% from Spring 2019, second highest, EU28: 18%).
-The rise in cost of living, health/ insurance programmes and environmental/ energy were also among the main issues the country has to face, as identified by Cypriots, as is unemployment.


Regarding problems faced by Cypriot citizens, the community identified the rise in cost of living (32% +4% in Spring 2019), economic struggles of a household (21% -11%, third highest percentage in Europe), and the educational system (17%, +5%, third highest, EU 28: 10%).


In relation to issues pertaining to the European Union, as identified by both Cypriot and other European participants, immigration was first, at 60% (+13% from Spring 2019). This was followed by terrorism (23%, -2%), and criminal activity (22%, +8%). Climate change was also discussed (24%, Cyprus 17% +3%), as was the economy (18%, Cyprus 18% - 2%).


Trusted Authority:

Cypriot participants stated that they do not trust political parties (87%), the national government (66%, +8%), and the National Assembly (63%, +2%), nor do they trust the United Nations (59%, +12%).

When it comes to the media, Cypriot participants stated that they do not trust printed press (48%, -3%), television (49%, -2%), the internet (46%, +5%), and social media (54%, +6%). The radio is also not trusted (52%, +3%).


Cypriot View Of The European Union:

When asked what the EU means to them, Cypriot participants responded:

Freedom of travel, tertiary education, and ability to work anywhere within the EU (65%, +6% from Spring 2019, EU28: 51%). The EU is also associated with the Euro (44%, +3%, EU28: 32%), a mix of cultures (42%, +3%, EU28: 28%).

 The EU also means also non-existent boarder control (35%, +13%, third highest in the EU, EU28: 19%), Cypriot participants said, as well as more crime (34%, +12% higher in EU, EU 28: 13%).
