Christodoulides: Government is Proceeding with its Energy Plans

The government is proceeding unhindered with its energy plans in cooperation with energy giants which are active in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has told the Cyprus News Agency.

The Spokesman was invited to comment on Turkish actions in Cyprus` EEZ especially after the arrival of drilling vessel Saipem 12000, which is expected to begin drilling in field 6 of Cyprus` EEZ.  Christodoulides mentioned that Ankara makes public statements or proceeds with actions which aim to question the Republic of Cyprus` sovereign rights, adding that "Ankara's moves and statements intensify as our energy plans are implemented".

He pointed out that the best response to Turkey is the presence of energy giants in the Republic of Cyprus` EEZ, which he described as a clear political and economic vote of confidence.

Christodoulides also told the Cyprus News Agency that the government will not get involved in a communications game of public confrontation with Turkey, thus serving Ankara`s aim, which is nothing more than creating a dispute over the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.

Concluding, Christodoulides said that the government, ‘through concrete actions on political, diplomatic and other levels, proceeds unobstructed with its energy plans in partnership with the energy giants operating in our EEZ".

Saipem 12000 is expected to begin drilling in the next few days.

The Minister of Energy Yiorgos Lakkotrypis welcomed – through his account on twitter – the drillship Saipem 12000 in Cyprus’ EEZ and wished companies ENI and TOTAL every success.
