Anastasiades: Confucius Institute Demonstrates Strong Cyprus – China Ties

The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus demonstrates the blossoming relationship between China and Cyprus, President Nicos Anastasides expressed at its opening ceremony yesterday.

“The cooperation between the University of Cyprus and the Beijing Institute of Education via the Confucius Institute will lead to innovative and progressive collaborations in the academic, research and educational fields,” Anastasides affirmed at the event.

Confucius Institutes are non-profit public institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, whose stated aim is to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries, support local Chinese teaching internationally, and facilitate cultural exchanges.

Thus, this development in Cyprus is sure to “pave the way for the blossoming of the already dynamic relationship between our two peoples”, Anastasides added.

In his address – delivered by the Minister of Education and Culture, Costas Kadis – the President said that cultural interaction, the exchange of knowledge and academic research are essential tools for bridging civilisations and building understanding between cultures.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus, he continued, will be a prime example of such valuable interaction between Cyprus and China.

“I am certain that the collaboration of the University of Cyprus and the Beijing Institute of Education will be a bright example of exceptional partnership, which will enhance the bonds between our two countries on various levels,” he concluded.
