The Director of LSE Dame Minouche Shafik in Cyprus

The Director of LSE Dame Minouche Shafik in Cyprus

The Cyprus LSE Alumni Association is proud to host a conversation with the LSE Director Dame Minouche Shafik, ‘Where is the world economy going and what can we do about it?’. Dame Shafik will be joined by former Minister of Finance and LSE alumnus, Michalis Sarris.

The event will take place on February 28, 2020, at 15:30, at the Head Office Building of Hellenic Bank in Nicosia.

The world economy has gone through a synchronized slowdown and the recovery looks precarious. Trade has slowed dramatically while investment and productivity continue to disappoint. Inequality has gotten worse in many countries and technological changes and automation will change jobs and global supply chains in future.

How can the economy get onto a healthier growth path and what policies are needed for that to happen? What would be the impact of a negative shock? Do governments, central banks and the international institutions have the tools and political will to address it?

Join us in this conversation with Minouche Shafik to discuss about the current state of the world economy and how we might get to a better place.

Dame Minouche Shafik is a leading economist, whose career has straddled public policy and academia. Βy the age of 36, Minouche, had become the youngest ever Vice President of the World Bank. She taught at Georgetown University and the Wharton Business School. She served as Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (2011-2014) and as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England (2014-2017). In 2017, Minouche was appointed as the 16th Director of the London School of Economics. She also serves as a Trustee of the British Museum, the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and the Economy Honours Committee. She was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2015.
