Microsoft Breaks Guinness World Record at Imagine Cup

Microsoft Breaks Guinness World Record at Imagine Cup

Microsoft has broken the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most People Trained in Computer Programming in 8 Hours.’
Proving that the organization is going where no other has in order to inspire generations of developers and encourage the future leaders of technology, Microsoft achieved the feat through a series of Coding Camps during the Finals of the Imagine Cup student tech competition, held in Seattle, Washington between July 27 and 31.

Around two thousand children from all over the Seattle area between the ages of 8-14, including student of the Boys & Girls Club of King County, converged on the Microsoft campus for a crash course on coding delivered in one-hour sessions. In four bustling rooms throughout Building 92, children were taught how to code by Microsoft professionals, free of charge.

Microsoft Student Partners and Imagine Cup student team competitors also participated, supervising the children’s progress and answering questions.

“I signed my kids up for the Imagine Coding Camp because I wanted them to get first-hand experience coding and the exposure to a company like Microsoft in general,” local parent Melody Murdock said. “I feel to be competitive in the future, these kids have to know about technology and will most likely be expected to know how to code at some level—no matter what field they go into.”

Melody enrolled her 7-year-old son, Everett and 10-year-old daughter, Sedona. “I was especially excited to take my daughter. I feel females don’t always get the encouragement or exposure to pursue interests or careers in the high-tech sector. I want her to know that’s an option.”

This, John Scott Tynes told Gold News during an exclusive interview on campus, is precisely the objective of the initiative.

“Imagine Cup is the showcase programme for young students who are creating technology and brining projects to life, so for us it is a chance to celebrate them and all their achievements. We have 33 teams from 33 countries participating in this year’s Imagine Cup and they are amazing, but there are a lot more students out there than just these guys, right?”

Microsoft’s main primary goal is to show students everywhere what is possible through the adoption of technology. “A student really can build a brain control robot, or a social media app – these are not just things that the grown-ups do when they go to work.”

The young students performed two coding exercises during the Coding Camps. The first, ‘Color Customization,’ teaches the basics of TouchDevelop and how to navigate the programme. The second exercise, ‘Piñata Breaker,’ challenges them to change backgrounds, graphics, add their own sounds and change the speed of their piñata.

Steven Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President & Chief Evangelist, Microsoft Corporation was presented with the official Guinness World Record for the ‘Most People Trained in Computer Programming in 8 Hours’ (pictured left), a true mark of Microsoft’s dedication to empowering youth through education and cultivating their enthusiasm for technology.
