Melco Cyprus Launches Environmental Initiatives Series

Melco Cyprus, operator of Cyprus Casinos (C2) and the upcoming integrated resort (IR) City of Dreams Mediterranean organised a clean-up of Enaerios coast, Limassol on 27 March 2021 under the auspices of the Limassol Municipality. The activity is first of a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability for the local community.

More than 40 colleagues collected large amounts of waste and debris from the coastline, including plastic bags, bottles, tins, cigarette butts and paper litter while observing government social distancing guidelines. Melco Cyprus volunteers were required to submit negative COVID-19 test results for participation, following strict Health & Hygiene protocols including wearing masks and using disinfectants while working in separate groups of just a few people to maintain safe social distances during the event. The Municipality of Limassol provided volunteers with all necessary equipment.

Property General Manager of City of Dreams Mediterranean and Cyprus Casinos, Grant Johnson stated,I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the Mayor and the Limassol Municipality for supporting this initiative. I wish also to thank each colleague who volunteered their time to realise this event. We aim to efficiently address environmental and social challenges by implementing long-term strategic planning and engaging key stakeholders in our CSR initiatives to bring about positive change to the local community. Melco’s fundamental CSR philosophy is to give back to the community it serves, hence, we are devoting our greatest efforts to contributing to society through a proactive and innovative approach. Via our multifaceted CSR programme, we plan to host a series of targeted activities in the upcoming months to promote sustainability across the community”.

The Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides said, “We are very happy to have joined forces with Melco to clean up Enaerios coast in an effort to provide a safer environment for residents and visitors. In fact, this event marks the first in a series of initiatives that Melco will be organising in cooperation with the Limassol Municipality, aimed at protecting the environment and improving the quality of life of the people of the local community. Through its activity, Melco has proven to be an invaluable partner of our Municipality and we are therefore very excited to be starting this collaboration and we look forward to our future joint initiatives. I wish to take the opportunity to thank Melco for the confidence they placed in our city by choosing it to develop Europe’s largest integrated resort. We are confident, that once completed, City of Dreams Mediterranean will constitute a jewel for our city, creating real value to the local economy and establishing Limassol as a premium global destination.”

As part of their joint activities, Melco and the Municipality of Limassol will soon be organising, along with the Sovereign Base Areas Administration, a clean-up of Lady’s Mile Beach.

Environmental protection is one of the strategic pillars of Melco's CSR program in Cyprus. Melco’s commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected across its operational and strategic development decisions, while best practices in sustainability extend to all its properties globally as part of the Group’s sustainability and CSR strategy ‘Above & Beyond.’
