GOLD New Issue: All Hands on Deck!

GOLD New Issue: All Hands on Deck!

If you are a regular reader of GOLD, you will already be familiar with the impressive facts and figures around the local shipping industry: Cyprus has the 11th largest merchant fleet in the world and the third-largest in the European Union, where it is also recognized as the third-largest third-party ship-management centre. Over 200 shipping companies are currently based in Cyprus and, in 2018, revenues from ship management alone amounted to €1.1 billion.

This year, while the entire planet found itself under complete or partial lockdown, the shipping industry kept supply chains open and maritime trade and transport moving, enabling an uninterrupted supply of essential goods such as food and medicines. The pandemic has reconfirmed the importance and value of maritime transport, and highlighted the need for a coherent plan if Cyprus is to maintain its status as a key player in the sector and grow even more.

In the October issue of GOLD, the global and local importance of shipping is explained in detail by industry experts who examine issues relating to current challenges, policy, technology and ship finance, while setting their sights firmly on the future. In this month’s cover story you will thus find interviews with several key players in the Cyprus shipping industry, together with specially commissioned articles by others.

You can read the views of Vassilios Demetriades, Deputy Minister of Shipping, Philippos Philis, President of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC), Andreas Hadjiyiannis, President of the Cyprus Union of Shipowners (CUS), CUS Vice-President Polys Hadjiioannou and CSC Board Member Prabhat Jha, all of whom spoke to GOLD, as well as those of Themis Papadopoulos, a Member of the Board of the International Shipping Chamber, CUS Vice-President George Mouskas, and CSC Director-General Thomas Kazakos, who contributed articles. We were also delighted to talk to Diane Gilpin, CEO and Founder of Smart Green Shipping Ltd, who advises the UK Government as a member of the Clean Maritime Council.
