GDPR: Impact on International Organizations?

GDPR: Impact on International Organizations?

George Z. Georgiou & Associates LLC presents the 2nd Data Forum on Thursday, 28 February 2019 at the Hilton Park Hotel in Nicosia, Cyprus. In its second installment, the Data Forum aims to bring to light the challenges and opportunities that have arisen during the implementation period of the GDPR regulation and explore the potential of data in the context of technological innovation.

This cross-industry forum is intended as a platform to help facilitate discussions on how data can be transformed into value and how international standards can facilitate that process. Speakers from Cyprus and abroad will share their experience and expertise in data collection, data management, data analytics and data protection. Participants will learn about the current state of data management; discuss ways to address interoperability; examine data security issues; and explore the capabilities and protocols needed to manage data effectively.

One of this year’s speakers is a representative from INTERPOL, the world’s largest international police organisation. Ms Caroline Goemans-Dorny took office as the INTERPOL Data Protection Officer (IDPO) in January 2016. Prior to her appointment as IDPO, Caroline worked as Senior Advisor at the Office of Legal Affairs of INTERPOL. In that capacity, she advised on data protection issues and carried out the coordination of INTERPOL’s participation in a number of EU funded research projects.

In her presentation, Caroline will focus on the challenges faced by international organisations following the implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) framework. Such organisations are governed by international public law and by the ruled and regulations that their constituent bodies have adopted. The GDPR is directly applicable to INTERPOL’s EU member countries and EU public and private entities with whom INTERPOL may enter into cooperation. Caroline will discuss the solutions offered within INTERPOL’s data protection framework to observe its independence as an international organization while ensuring “legal interoperability” with its EU member countries and EU cooperation partners.

The forum will be conducted in English and full participation corresponds to 4 CPD units. For more information regarding the event, please click here.

Alongside the forum, attendees will be offered the chance to network with like-minded peers and professionals from various sectors of the economy.
