Dr. Fabian Zuleeg: ‘The Future of the Economic and Monetary Union’

Dr. Fabian Zuleeg: ‘The Future of the Economic and Monetary Union’

Dr. Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive & Chief Economist, European Policy Centre, Belgium spoke at the 8th Limassol Economic Forum, about ‘The Future of the Economic and Monetary Union’.

The presentation elaborated on the potential for a Franco-German deal on the future governance of EMU, following on from Macron’s victory in France and the German government elected in September. It explored the key elements that are needed to guarantee the stability of the Euro in the future, noting where the biggest political hurdles are likely to lie.

Zuleeg also discussed the crisis revealed in EMU shortcomings, by pointing out the reasons behind this, such as the lack of convergence, economic interdependence without political integration, insufficient crisis management instruments, structural reform and unemployment, political risk factors, legitimacy and sovereignty, and the flexibility vs. rules.
