Art from A-Z
van Gogh, Vincent
Despite his fame and fortune, Vincent van Gogh did not begin exploring his artistic abilities until the age of 27. A mere ten years later, he died from a gunshot wound, generally accepted to have been self-inflicted.
Within ten short years, van Gogh created a body of work spanning 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolours, drawings, sketches, and prints, notable for their rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour.
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Doctor Gachet from 1890 sold for $82.5 million in 1990 – its inflation adjusted price reaching $146.8 million.
