Art from A-Z
Cezanne, Paul
Credited as having intensely studied his subjects, with his often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes described as being highly characteristic of his work, Paul Cezanne is credited as having formed the bridge between the late 19th century Impressionism, and the early 20th century’s new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism.
Both Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso are said to have hailed Cezanne as being “the father of all of us”.
His painting, The Card Players (1892/93), sold in 2011 to the Royal Family of Qatar for $250 million. The fabulous psychological intensity in the faces of the players makes this painting a masterpiece of post-impressionist art.
