FM Christodoulides Condemns the Signing of The `Memorandum` Between Turkey and Libya

FM Christodoulides Condemns the Signing of The `Memorandum` Between Turkey and Libya

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides, condemned today the signing of the `memorandum` between Turkey and Libya "allegedly attempting to delimit maritime zones between them, stressing that the memorandum, inter alia, violates international law and has no legal basis at all," the CNA reports.

The Minister made this statement during his intervention in the framework of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), held today in Brussels.

In his intervention, the Minister stressed that "this development, coupled with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on military cooperation, raises concern also in other states in the wider region, while undermining the efforts of the international community to create suitable conditions to allow for a Summit dedicated to finding a political solution to the Libyan problem. "

He also noted that "these actions by Turkey have been following what Ankara has been doing illegally for months in the maritime zones of the Republic of Cyprus, for which the EU has taken specific decisions".

The issue is expected to be dealt with by the next European Council on 12 December. As for the rest of the agenda items, the Foreign Ministers reviewed the EU`s human rights policy.

In a second statement, Nikos Christodoulides argued that "the EU must continue to take the lead in the issue at the global level, acting in the light of the full implementation of Human Rights, far from ad hoc policies".

Addressing the debate on EU-Africa relations, the Foreign Minister said, inter alia, that "it is important that countries in the region play a leading role in the reforms that need to be made, while defining the EU`s approach to the region, the strategy of other international actors in Africa should also be taken into account. "

Finally, in the margins of the Council`s works, the Minister of Foreign Affairs had a meeting with the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borell, reaffirming the commitment of the new Commission to implement Council decisions concerning the illegal actions of Turkey within the EEZ and the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus.

The High Representative and the Minister of Foreign Affairs also exchanged views on further enhancing PESCO co-operation as well as on Middle East issues.

In the morning, the Foreign Minister participated in a working breakfast presented by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, along with the Foreign Minister of Northern Macedonia and the Albanian Deputy Foreign Minister.
